Knowing God

Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring. (Hosea 6:3)

God's heart is that we might know him. A few verses later in chapter six of Hosea, God reveals his heart even more clearly when he says, "I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings." Pretty clear, don't you think?

You may be thinking to yourself, but how does one come to know God? Good question.

Think of someone you know well. A best friend. A spouse. A boyfriend or girlfriend. How did you come to know them? You initially met them at some point. Maybe a friend introduced you. Perhaps you met them at church... or at school.

Once introduced, you undoubtedly got to know them over a period of time. You talked. You listened. Maybe you played together. You ate together. You spent time together. You shared secrets. You cried together. You built trust. Perhaps you fell in love.

And so it goes with God.

God uniquely introduced himself through his son, Jesus Christ, in order that we might know God personally. You may have been introduced to Jesus by a friend, a spouse, in church, or some other way. In order to truly get to know him, you must do the same things. Talk to Jesus.  Share your heart...your doubts, your fears, your frustrations, your hopes and dreams. Listen to him. Read his love letter to you. Develop trust in him. Respond to him. Perhaps even fall in love with him.

This is what the disciples did. This is how they got to know Jesus.

Have you been introduced to Jesus?
